Grafts and hairs are different counts. This conversion uses your selected average; it does not predict survival, growth or final density.

What the figure means

For each selected region, the calculator multiplies the area in square centimetres by the added graft density. For example, 20 cm² at 30–40 grafts per cm² gives 600–800 grafts. It adds the selected regions together and rounds to whole grafts.

The hairline, frontal scalp, mid-scalp and crown are separate regions. The temples can be selected individually. Left and right refer to the person shown, so they are reversed when you look at the front of the head.

A graft is the small piece of tissue moved during a transplant and can contain more than one hair. The hairs-per-graft setting is only an arithmetic assumption. Use a figure from your consultation if one has been provided.

What a consultation needs to establish

This tool does not measure your head, subtract existing hair or assess the donor area. A suitable plan also depends on the cause and progression of hair loss, your existing hair, hair characteristics, scalp or skin condition and the donor hair available.

The British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery’s guidance on surgical planning explains the doctor’s role in recommending the number of grafts and the treatment design. A higher calculator total does not establish that the grafts are available or that they should be used.

Surgery has risks, including bleeding, infection, scarring and a result that does not meet expectations. The NHS guide to hair transplants explains these limitations. Your surgeon should discuss the risks relevant to your proposed procedure.
